It also discusses animal welfare and animal rights.
Academic Supervisor: José Luis Corona Lisboa
Animal Breeding
This course studies the reproductive process of animals with special emphasis on the application of recent techniques in solving reproductive problems associated with fertility and infertility. It considers the biometrical relationships among relatives, methods of estimating genetic parameters, application of crossbreeding systems, and livestock selection techniques. It explores reproductive programs applying techniques of artificial insemination and pregnancy evaluation in livestock.
Academic Supervisor: José Luis Corona Lisboa
Animal Nutrition
This course explains the role of animal nutrition in modern agriculture and society, of nutrient metabolism, the formulation of diets from an array of available feedstuff, and the life-cycle feeding of animals. It describes the properties of feedstuff used in the feeding of domestic animals and the feeding practices for a variety of livestock and exotic animal species. It discusses the agronomic, nutritional, and toxicological properties of feedstuff, and gives a solid grounding in the fundamentals of feed processing and diet formulation.
Academic Supervisor: José Luis Corona Lisboa
Livestock Industry
This course presents today's modern livestock industry and the multifaceted issues it is facing. It explores various livestock production in rangeland environments and considers breeding, reproduction, nutrition, marketing, and distribution, as well as the techniques in live animal evaluation.
Academic Supervisor: José Luis Corona Lisboa
Animal Reproduction
This course deals with the reproductive mechanisms, environmental influences on reproductive endocrinology, physiology, behavior, and ecology of vertebrates. Discussions extend from organismal to cellular level and focus on the diversity of reproductive patterns among animals. It considers the effects of temperature, oxygen, and other environmental factors on the distribution and abundance of animals; as well as habitat selection, food strategies, and mating systems in the organization of reproduction.
Academic Supervisor: José Luis Corona Lisboa
Range Nutrition Techniques
This course studies range animal nutrition techniques, including regulation of forage intake, natural, and artificial animal lactation; the effect of digestion, metabolism, and assimilation of nutrients in livestock breeding and production; and the special characteristics of ruminant and non-ruminant nutrition.
Academic Supervisor: José Luis Corona Lisboa
Food Science
This course deals with the management of food service systems including purchasing, receiving, regulation of inventory, and factors affecting nutrients in food. It reviews food quality-control parameters (sensory, color, and texture) and added-value such as traditional or novel commodity, ingredient, and process combinations.
Academic Supervisor: Leonie van Heerden
Bioprocessing of Byproducts
This course presents the principles of chemistry, microbiology, and engineering applicable to the design of systems for the treatment and utilization of livestock manures and other agricultural byproducts. It explains the bioenergetics of microbial processes, composting agricultural and animal wastes, odor measurement, and toxic control.
Academic Supervisor: Jorge Poveda Arias
Farm Management
This course explains the key aspects in today's agriculture production industry. It shows how a good farm management requires the application of economic principles, budgeting procedures, and information systems to determine optimal combinations of crop and livestock. It considers the whole farm resources, planning, and management.
Academic Supervisor: John Stanley Bircham
Range Management
This course integrates the principles of animal genetics and physiology, nutrition, live animal evaluation, reproduction, and their application to the production of beef and dairy cattle, sheep, swine, horses, and poultry. It merges range ecology, resources, and economics into practical and profitable ranch management and business plans. It shows the utilization of performance and financial records, budgeting, feed resource planning, market strategies, breeding plans, and computer applications.
