Human Anatomy & Physiology
This course describes the organization and function of the human body. It explores the microscopic structure of its constituent, their interrelationships, and their integration within the body as a whole.
Academic Supervisor: Marcos Mazzuka Petitta
Human Body & Mind
This course examines the human being as an integrated physiological and psychological entity. It covers aspects of the human body's function, development, and care and explores the interaction between body and mind in physiological, clinical, and psychological terms. It also describes the interaction between the human body and mind and their environment and their evolution.
Academic Supervisor: Jean Mutabaruka
Human Nutrition
This course examines the properties, functions, requirements, interrelationships, and metabolism of nutrients, and the nutritional needs throughout stages of the life cycle including pregnancy and lactation, infancy, adolescence, and aging. It deals with the socioeconomic, cultural, and psychological influences of food, nutrition behavior, food safety, and biotechnology.
Academic Supervisor: Leonie van Heerden
Infectious Diseases
This course explores the methods used in epidemiology and their application to the critical appraisal of clinical, epidemiological, and health administration for evidence-based management of health care organizations, improvement of delivery of health services, and for creating health policies. An emphasis will be placed on understanding the relationships between the host, the parasite, and the environment in infectious disease investigations.
Academic Supervisor: Jose W. Rodriguez
Cell Development
This course examines the genetic, molecular, and functional aspects of cellular development. It covers genome structure and function; gametogenesis; informational macromolecules; cell cycle control; gene-regulatory hierarchies in pattern formation, sex determination, cell-cell interaction, signal transduction, and hormone regulation; control of cell lineage and specification of cell type; and methods of genetic manipulation and modification.
Academic Supervisor: Girish Kumar Srivastava
Cell Biology
This course provides an integrated study of the structure, function, and interactions of cells, with an emphasis on their molecular composition and dynamics. Topics covered include: membrane structure and transport; receptors and channels; protein targeting; cytoskeleton; cell cycle control; signal transduction; programmed cell death; cell adhesion and differentiation.
Academic Supervisor: Jose R. Vazquez
Biochemical Organic Balance
Every disease, symptom, discharge, and pain indicates a chemical imbalance in the body. A body that is chemically well-balanced will normalize itself. This course focuses on the chemical elements, their structures, and their application, including vitamins, enzymes, proteins, starches, prostaglandins, and minerals found in foods in order to understand the biochemical organic balance from which health and well-being spring.
Academic Supervisor: Jose W. Rodriguez
Human Biology
This course discusses the development of cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems while integrating molecular biology, genetics, ecology, evolution, and diversity. It specifically covers the biology topics that are of relevance to humans, their heath and sickness. It also describes how the human organism is maintained and healed.
Academic Supervisor: Daniel Scott Janik
Immunology
This course describes the immune system, its structure, components, mechanisms, immunological methods, immune response, and inflammation. Special emphasis is given to clinical immunology namely hypersensitivity, atopy, auto-immunity, and immunodeficiency disorders.
Academic Supervisor: Jose W. Rodriguez
Biological Toxicology
This course explores toxicants; their modes of action; their cellular and molecular targets and the mechanisms by which these latter respond, and their detoxification. It shows biological methodologies and approaches to identify and study cellular targets of toxicants, and the molecular mechanisms used by chemical, physical, and biological agents to produce harmful effects on biological tissues, organ systems, and DNA.
Academic Supervisor: Jose R. Vazquez
Human Pathology
This course of pathological processes in the human body focuses on the basic mechanisms and concepts of tissue reaction to injury, degenerative cellular changes, cellular response to the inflammatory reaction, and concepts of immunology. Additionally, pathologic responses of specific body systems to infections and degenerative diseases are stressed.
Academic Supervisor: Daniel Scott Janik

This course explains the mechanisms of action and interaction of the physiological body systems with pathological and clinical considerations. It presents a system and not a regional approach that facilitates the therapist focus on the relationship between structures and function.
Academic Supervisor: Ángela Gandaria Marsillí
Toxicological Pathology
This course evaluates the pathologic responses of cells and tissues to toxic compounds with emphasis on the toxicology of mammalian body systems. It also considers the toxicology of air pollutants and the response of the respiratory system to inhaled gaseous and particulate toxicants.
Academic Supervisor: Daniel Scott Janik
Epidemiology
This course reviews the principles of epidemiology and their application to health. It studies the epidemiological factors and the prevention and control of infectious diseases in addition to their occupational and environmental determinants.
