This program in international studies offers a cross-disciplinary approach to the major political, economic, social and cultural issues that dominate our global society. It will analyze the phenomena which have arisen in an increasingly globalized world. It considers the impact of international relations between nations, comparative politics from several perspectives, the economics of globalization, the effects of international law and the social and cultural diversity being transformed by globalization.

This course explores Western imperialism, and the revolutions, wars, and colonialism in the XVIII, XIX, and XX Centuries, and how these events affected national frontiers, shaped countries and population, and changed the social and political structures, and ultimately the way of living.

This course reviews the major political, social, ideological, economic, and cultural trends that developed throughout Middle East from the rise of Islam, the Crusades, the Ottoman Empire, and the age of imperialism, to the present Middle East nationalism.

This course explores the major issues in East Asian civilization from the early times to current days. While the focus is on China, Japan and Korea, attention is also given to inner Asian peoples and traditions, like Mongolia and Tibet. This course introduces the dynamics of political behavior in the Middle East. It explains the ideological and cultural foundations, the nature, and the performance of several political systems in this region.

Comparative Politics: The Far East
This course examines the politics of Asian countries through an overview of the history and culture of selected countries and the study of their emergence as modern nations. Emphasis is placed upon China, Japan, India, Pakistan, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Comparisons are drawn between the various historical and political dimensions of these countries.

This course surveys different trade policies used by both developed and developing countries. It examines issues important to trade policy such tariffs and non-tariff barriers, safeguards, voluntary restraints, dumping, and subsidies. It also covers trade strategies, agricultural trade, developing country rules, and regionalism.

It covers the history, emergence, and contemporary politics and problems of selected countries from the East and the West in a comparative manner.

International Conflict Resolution
This course investigates the origins and the theories of conflict and war and their prevention. It analyses the relationship between foreign policy, national security, attainment of political objectives, conflict and violence, and the political economy of war. It examines the transformation of conflict into social violence, the means to end hostilities, and the administration of peace processes.

This course discusses the great power relations in the 20th century. Several critical issues of world equilibrium are analyzed, as well as notions of national power, the paths to power, balance of power, and collective security. It presents the instruments of international peace and order. It examines the following topics in international politics: massive destruction arms control, wars of intervention, the environment, global interest versus self-determination, and peace management.

This distance learning education program is completed by a traditional correspondence instruction method. Once you sign up for the course, Bircham International University will send you (to your mailing address) the suggested textbooks. After reading the book, you will be asked to write a 20 to 35 pages report that reflect your understanding of the book. This report is equivalent to the exam and can be submitted by email or mail. Bircham International University will evaluate your written work. If passed, BIU will issue the corresponding diploma.
